Understanding Deafness
HOME / UNDERSTANDING DEAFNESS
Understanding deafness is the biggest move society can make to removing the barriers faced by deaf people.
Deaf people can achieve, we know that. They just need the rest of society to make small changes to give them a chance.
GDA can help your organisation, school or group be more deaf aware. We can provide Deaf Awareness Training that will enable you to make your services more accessible to people living with deafness.
Did you know that for a British Sign Language (BSL) user, BSL is their first language, not English? That means that for every piece of information we are sharing in English, it is not truly accessible to a group of people within our community.
Did you know that by giving the option to text or email to make appointments, you’ll be opening up your services to an even wider audience? Remember that the communication is still in English so providing information in BSL or booking an interpreter is vital too.
In today’s technology-driven world, there is no reason why deaf, hard of hearing and deafened people cannot be part of mainstream society. It is up to us to be part of the change.
