Members of the Deaf community join supporters and partners to celebrate GDA's 100th birthday

GDA was delighted to welcome 80 guests from its 100yr history, to its Barnwood Community Centre for a special drinks reception to celebrate the charity's significant milestone anniversary.

Supporters, colleagues past and present, along with members of the local Deaf community came together for the evening of Tuesday 15th October to share stories and recap GDA memories from over the years. It was a particularly special moment to have three GDA CEO's together, between them having given almost twenty years of service to GDA - from left to right, Maggie Conu (2000 to 2008), Sharon Bryant (current CEO) and Jenny Hopkins (2008 to 2018)

Guests were able to browse a 100yr timeline that started with a newspaper article printed on the 25th October 1919, announcing a meeting being held at the Bishop of Gloucester's Palace to discuss the formation of an Association that would be to serve the local Deaf population. The timeline concluded with an image of young people who completed their Snowdon climb in July, to represent GDA today.

Sharon Bryant, GDA's CEO said "A huge thank you to all those that joined us for our centenary drinks reception. It was lovely to have the centre filled with community members, staff, volunteers, Trustees, partners and of course, two previous CEOs, to help us celebrate. We certainly did this in style with delicious food from Yumma Food, an amazing 100 year cake from Samantha at Sugar Rose Kitchen... and drinks flowed courtesy of GIN, Citrus HR and Dizions. It was an opportunity to reflect on our history and many achievements as well as looking in to the future. It has been an incredible year for us reaching such a milestone and we look forward to continuing the GDA journey"

The evening wouldn't have taken place were it not for the generous support of the following businesses, so our sincere thanks to them for their continued support:

  • Gloucestershire Independent Network (GIN)
  • Yumma Food
  • Gloucestershire College
  • Sugar Rose Kitchen
  • Bottlegreen
  • Dizions
  • Citrus HR
  • HB Digital
